Online Self-paced Operative Course (Australia Students)
Start your journey toward becoming a qualified Road Safety Barrier installer
The ASHTAS Operative course is the first step for anyone working as part of a crew installing Road Safety Barriers (RSB). As an operative, you support the installation process under supervision, and this course provides the essential foundation required to progress through the Austroads Safety Hardware Training and Accreditation Scheme (ASHTAS).
Course Format
This online learning programme is delivered through five sections:
- Four learning modules
- One online examination
Total learning time is approximately 5 hours.
Learning Modules
The four modules cover the core knowledge required for Operative-level competency:
Module 1 – Introduction & Roles
An overview of the training scheme and the responsibilities of each party involved — including your role as an operative.
Module 2 – Understanding the Scheme
How ASHTAS is structured, how individuals progress through the pathway, and the importance of quality in barrier installation.
Module 3 – Road Safety Hardware Performance
Key concepts around barrier performance, system behaviour, and correct use.
Module 4 – Highway Terminology & Barrier Components
Essential terminology, barrier system elements, and how these relate to your day‑to‑day installation activities.
Online Examination
After completing the learning modules, you will sit a 40‑question multi‑choice test.
- Pass mark: 24/40 (80%)
- Time allowed: 1 hour
- Re‑sit: Available after 21 days (fee: $230)
- Assessment method: Online proctored exam
Results are confirmed only after Lantra completes quality assurance.
Proctored Exam Requirements (Important)
To maintain the integrity of the assessment, the following conditions must be met.
Failure to comply will result in your exam being voided.
- No headphones or earphones
- Do not read questions or answers aloud
- You must be alone in the room
- Do not leave the room during the exam
- No talking or communication with others
- No mobile phones or internet browsing
- No notes, training materials, or reference documents
- Your workspace must be clear of paperwork
- Your phone must be turned off
- Valid photo ID is required (driver’s licence or passport)
Online proctor support is available only for technical issues.
Technical Requirements
- Stable internet connection with a minimum upload speed of 1.5 Mbps
- Ethernet connection is strongly recommended
- Laptop or tablet running Chrome, Edge, Firefox, iOS, or Safari
- A workbook is provided at the start of training
- Computers are available onsite if required for the exam
Payment & Access
Course fee: $560.00 + GST AUD
Access to the learning platform is provided once payment is received.
Learning materials are normally issued within 24 hours of payment.
