ASHTAS FAQ

We all have questions and this is the most common we are asked about Austroads Safety Hardware Training and Accreditation Scheme

The Austroads Safety Hardware Training and Accreditation Scheme (ASHTAS) delivers a high standard and nationally consistent set of training outcomes for individuals installing and maintaining road safety barriers in Australia and New Zealand.

Who needs to complete the training?

Everyone who has an active role in an installation crew installing Road Safety Barriers (RSB) under supervision will need to complete the Operative Qualification. Those in supervision roles will need to complete Installer A and Installer B training and complete the assessment for each.

I have completed the training how do I show I have the accreditation?

On successfully completing each stage you will be issued an E-card which is a cloud-based solution operated by Lantra and can be accessed via the learner’s mobile phone. The learner will also be issued a certificate on completing each stage.

Who is Lantra?

In partnership with Austroads, Lantra has developed an accreditation scheme for Operatives and Installers working in the Road Safety Barrier (RSB) sector. Our collective vision is to support industry; employers and the RSB workforce in providing a ‘right-first-time’ approach to installations and maintenance activities, thereby embedding best practices and a safe working environment across this industry.

What is the stages of training?

You will start with Operative Learning which is a basic understanding of roles and responsibilities within the crew. It also starts the learner’s pathway to understanding the types of barriers in use and the accreditation scheme.

Step two in the pathway is Installer A. This starts explaining how the next steps of learning and accreditation will work and your use of an E-Logbook to record your installations for assessment. It also looks more closely at your role of managing a crew and the different types of barrier Systems

Step three following you completing your installer A assessment you will complete at least one of the Module B Public Domain system training and assessment to be a fully accredited installer for that system type.

Step four is optional for you to complete the learning and assessment for proprietary systems within your accredited system type.

Is the training available now?

Currently, we offer operative, Installer A and B learning either in the classroom or online.

Are there any prerequisites before I do the operative workshop?

Yes, you will need to hold ConstructSafe Card for New Zealand learners and the equivalent for Australian learners for their state

Who sets the materials and tests?

Lantra has developed and set all the course and test materials in association with Austroads members. Roading Industry Support Services facilitates the courses and tests as an approved training provider to Lantra.

Do I have to do this as someone that installs barriers?

Austroads members have set out their own timeframes of when people need to start holding this accreditation. New Zealand Transport Agency has set out that System Installers undertaking the installation of new road safety hardware, who have not attended and passed a Waka Kotahi endorsed course in the previous three years as at Jan 1st, 2025 must attend Austroads Safety Hardware Training and Accreditation Scheme (ASHTAS) training prior to undertaking installation works on the state highway network. System Installers must maintain currency as required by the ASHTAS initiative.
