Start your journey toward becoming a qualified Road Safety Barrier Installer
The ASHTAS Operative course is the essential first step for anyone working as part of a crew installing Road Safety Barriers (RSB). As an operative, you support installation activities under supervision, and this programme provides the core knowledge required to progress through the Austroads Safety Hardware Training and Accreditation Scheme (ASHTAS).
Course Format
This online learning programme is delivered through five sections:
- Four learning modules
- One online examination
Total learning time: Approximately 5 hours
Learning Modules
The four modules build the foundation for Operative‑level competency:
Module 1 — Introduction & Roles
An overview of the ASHTAS training scheme, the responsibilities of each party involved, and your role as an operative within an installation crew.
Module 2 — Understanding the Scheme
How ASHTAS is structured, how individuals progress through the pathway, and why quality assurance is critical in barrier installation.
Module 3 — Road Safety Hardware Performance
Key concepts relating to barrier performance, system behaviour, and correct use in the field.
Module 4 — Highway Terminology & Barrier Components
Essential terminology, barrier system elements, and how these relate to day‑to‑day installation activities.
Online Examination
After completing the modules, you will sit a 40‑question multi‑choice exam.
- Pass mark: 24/40 (80%)
- Time allowed: 1 hour
- Re‑sit: Available after 21 days (fee: $230)
- Assessment method: Online exam
Results are confirmed only after Lantra completes quality assurance.

- A digital copy of the workbook is provided at the start of training
